- Cinnabar lacquer is made by building up hundreds of almost translucent sheets of lacquer made from resin until it reached the correct thickness and depth of colour.. The name Cinnabar refers to the mineral Cinnabar that was added to produce the wonderful red colour seen here. Although the mineral is now replaced by a polymer (to avoid mercury poisoning) the basic technique has not changed.

- traditionally the name Cinnabar refered to just the red coloured laquer but other colours acheived by adding different minerals (carbon for black, and orpiment for yellow) are now also sometimes refered to as Cinnabar.

- When the Dragon and Phoenix are found together they are representative of a happy and hamonious marriage, the Dragon representing the male and the Phoenix representing the female.
